#6: Fleur-de-ME: QuickSandz

If you ever need a pick-me-up, find QuickSandz.  Her permanent smile, brightly-colored hair, and bubbly personality are sure to put you in a good mood. Before she heads into battle against the Smashinistas this Saturday, let’s get to know more about this M80s blocker and event-coordinator extraordinaire.

Q: What’s your favorite memory about starting Arch Rival?

Quicksandz: One that will stick with me for eternity, happened just recently. Instead of regular practice, Bricktator taught us a synchronized routing to “Circle of Life” from The Lion King. We all had so much fun and laughed at ourselves because, let’s be honest, it was amazingly ridiculous in our mouth guards and bulky gear. I love how we can all be so fierce yet unbelievably goofy! Check out our routine here.

Q: Do you remember a moment that you felt you really belonged?

QuickSandz: Honestly, it was at Sibling Rivalry, the coed tournament co-hosted by Arch Rival and the Gatekeepers. I took on a job to organize all the volunteers (and other miscellaneous things) for the three day tournament. I was working with these amazing people/veteran skaters and organizers and it was terrifying. I felt like I had something to prove because I was still a derby baby. The tournament went off pretty seamlessly. Still to this day, I get a pat on the back and thanks for the hard work I put in. I felt part of the crew and appreciated. Being in this league is way more than just skating.

Q: What makes this league so special?

Quicksandz: I have never seen such a large group of people with this desire to make something succeed. The league is skater-run. Everything that happens, every event, every bout- everything is organized by someone in the league. Organized willingly at that. Everyone has such a drive and passion for derby and community that it blows my mind. I love these people.

Q: What do you wish the public of St. Louis would know about ARCH?

Quicksandz: That we’re more than people who ‘hit each other on skates.’  There’s a tremendous amount of talent both on and off the track. We’re mothers, teachers, lawyers, crazy chemists, artists, and free spirits. Come join us- you won’t regret it!
